Restoration of an ancient footpath

The closure of St Breward Stores and Post Office in Row, and their relocation to The Old Inn at Churchtown in 2017, meant that Churchtown became the sole focal area of St Breward, with the parish church, village Shop & Post Office, the Old Inn and village hall all residing there.

This role has increased with the recent closure of Row Methodist Chapel.
From the Millennium and before, St Breward Parish Council had actively tried to improve the poor condition of the parish’s principal public footpath (FP 13 in the list of the parish’s paths). Cornwall County Council, which had a statutory duty to maintain the footpath, pleaded lack of funds and the path deteriorated year on year.


Helped by our Cornwall councillor Mr. Dominic Fairman and Chris Monk, Senior Countryside Officer, the Parish Council successfully applied for and was awarded just under £44,000 from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development through the Atlantic & Moor Local Action Group. This grant represented 80% of the project costs, St Breward Parish Council securing the remaining 20%. We would also like to thank Cornwall Council for a loan to pay for the works, as the grant money was not released until the project had finished.

So, when you enjoy using FP13 remember that if it wasn’t for the financial help from European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Atlantic & Moor Local Action Group, you would not be able to use FP13.

There are eleven grit bins in the Parish, all will be refilled within the next 48 hours

Twentyfour Hours to Proclaim the King

St Breward Parish Council, as with all Parish and Town Councils, had only 24 hours to arrange a formal proclamation of the succession of King Charles III, being asked to conduct it as soon after 6pm on Sunday 11th September.

A quick decision was made to hold it at our War Memorial, looking out towards Wadebridge and the coast just before Sunset. The Met Office were forecasting 10% chance of rain. The next problem was what could we add to the actual proclamation to enhance and solemnise the occasion. Quick phone calls by our clerk, Anita Cornelius and councillors resulted in St Breward Church agreeing to say a prayer and St Breward Band agreeing to provide the music.

So, on Sunday evening 11th September at 7.30pm, 55 members of the community came together at the War Memorial on Mine Hill. St Breward Band played 'Evensong', followed by two prayers from Paddy McShee, one for HM Queen Elizabeth II and one for King Charles III. Denis Lusby, Chairman of the St Breward Parish Council read out the Proclamation, the band played the national anthem to which everyone sang.

As an aside: When the late Queen's coffin cortege made its way down the Royal Mile, in Edinburgh to St Giles Cathedral, she passed by kerb stones and bollards from DeLank quarry
